  • 23% of all accidents involving abrasive wheels are due to the wrong wheel being fitted
  • 29% of all accidents involving abrasive wheels are due to over-speeding
  • 48% of all accidents involving abrasive wheels are due to operator error or unsafe systems of work

Hazards associated with abrasive wheels include: the wheel breaking or bursting, contact or entanglement with a running wheel, physical injury from the component being cut or ground, as well as noise, and dust inhalation.

Injuries due to abrasive wheel accidents can include cuts and gashes, burns, digit and limb damage up to and including amputation, severe bodily injuries, severe facial injuries, disfigurement, and even death. There are approximately 5,400 abrasive wheel accidents annually, over half of which involve injuries to the head and face.
